Last week we spent two days sailing around the islet of Dansangrundet in a Godzilla sailboat, but we haven’t had a chance to taste the well water this year. Nesting on the islet is coming to an end and the tern chicks are not yet able to fly. In the vicinity of the islet there is also a leisure settlement, a fish farm and boat traffic. The well’s drinking water is intended for all joint property owners and seafarers. This is the first public artwork we have created in the outer archipelago and we are working to ensure that the work does not harm wildlife. Although the name of the institute underlines destruction, our aim is not to cause or accelerate the loss of biodiversity. We observed pairs of mute swans living in the area and called bird experts about swan nesting. We learned that this spring’s nesting of mute swans failed due to the recurrent wintry weather in the spring in all of Finland, and no chicks were born.
Viime viikolla purjehdimme kahtena päivänä Dansangrundetin luodon ympärillä Godzilla-purjeveneen kyydissä, mutta emme ole päässeet tänä vuonna maistamaan kaivovettä. Pesintä luodolla on päättymäisillään ja tiiran poikaset eivät ole vielä lentokykyisiä. Luodon läheisyydessä on vapaa-ajan asutusta, kalankasvattamo ja veneliikennettä. Kaivon juomavesi on tarkoitettu kaikille yhteisomistusalueen omistajille sekä merenkävijöille. Tämä on ensimmäinen ulkosaaristoon toteuttamamme julkinen taideteos ja pyrimme toimimaan siten ettei työskentelystä aiheutuisi haittaa luonnon eläville. Vaikka instituutin nimi alleviivaa tuhoa, ei tavoitteemme ole aiheuttaa tai kiihdyttää luontokatoa. Havaitsimme alueella asustavia kyhmyjoutsenpareja ja soitimme lintuasiantuntijoille joutsenten pesinnästä. Opimme että tämän kevään kyhmyjoutsenten pesintä epäonnistui takatalven takia koko Suomessa, eikä poikueita ole syntynyt.
